Functional Fitness-style workouts such as HYROX, Spartan Race, and CrossFit are becoming popular today because they are full of challenges and emphasize strength, stamina, and physical endurance. Knowing the differences helps you choose the workout style that suits you, prepare correctly, reduce the risk of injury, and reach the finish line smoothly.
HYROX Build stamina Test strength potential
HYROX is a standardized fitness race that combines running alternating with Functional Training using fixed equipment over a specified distance. There are 8 stations, including SkiErg an upper-body endurance pull, Sled Push pushing a weighted sled forward, Sled Pull pulling a sled backward, drawing power from the back muscles, Burpee Broad Jump a burpee with a forward broad jump Rowing rowing while controlling breathing rhythm, Farmers Carry carrying kettlebells over a long distance, Sandbag Lunges walking lunges with a sandbag, and Wall Balls throwing a ball to a target while the body is fatigued. You must run 1 kilometer alternating with completing 1 station, repeated for a total of 8 rounds. There is no time limit, to test 360-degree physical performance. You can compete solo, as a pair, or as a team.
Highlights: HYROX competitions are typically held indoors and emphasize sustained stamina more than difficult technical movements. It is suitable for runners who want to build strength, fitness enthusiasts with clear measurable goals, and anyone who wants to level up their exercise capacity.
Preparation: Focus on consistent running training, build muscular endurance, and gradually increase distance and repetitions. Go to the gym to learn proper use of the SkiErg and Rowing machines. Practice wall-ball throws consistently while in a fatigued state. Before the race, simulate real race conditions and recover well beforehand Choose stable shoes with good grip and eat enough energy-providing food.
SPARTAN RACE Fit to overcome obstacles Test physical and mental toughness
Spartan Race is an obstacle course race that alternates running with overcoming various obstacles, such as rope climbs, heavy carries, crawling through mud, spear throws, and more. If you fail an obstacle, there are penalties that sap your strength during the race. There are several formats, such as:
- Spartan SPRINT Focuses on speed and basic obstacles such as barbed-wire crawls, wall climbs, etc.; suitable for first-time competitors.
- Spartan SUPER Longer distance with more distinctive and more intense obstacles, challenging both body and mind.
- Spartan BEAST Emphasizes running on steep routes and hills, with obstacles appearing when the body is at its most fatigued.
- Spartan ULTRA The longest and toughest distance, running loops and/or repeating obstacle sections for more than 60 obstacles. It requires the most stamina. You must prepare your body—especially nutrition—and prepare mentally to make it through.
- Spartan Kids A course for children aged 4 – 14 years, emphasizing safety, teamwork, and confidence in overcoming obstacles, creating pride for children and families. Penalties are light and staff closely supervise.
- Spartan Trail A trail-running course on real terrain with clearly defined participant categories.
Highlights: Spartan Race competitions are typically held outdoors and emphasize toughness, stamina, agility, and overcoming obstacles to test both body and mind. They are suitable for people who enjoy challenges, with a focus on fun, power, and strength.
Preparation: Focus on mixed training (Hybrid Training) for both stamina and strength. Train long-distance running alternating with weight training such as Squat, Deadlift etc. Add Functional Training to simulate obstacles such as carrying, pulling, and balance. Plan nutrition emphasizing protein and carbohydrates to support energy and recovery. Stretch regularly. You should train in an environment similar to the actual course, such as rough terrain, mud, or inclines, so the body adapts and injury risk is reduced. You should check your physical readiness and consult a doctor before competing, especially if you have underlying conditions.
CROSSFIT All-around fitness Test exercise skills
CrossFit is a high-intensity training program that combines movements and cardio from various sports, including weightlifting, gymnastics, running, and other sports with no fixed format. It focuses on high-performance workouts in a limited time. It can be done alone or with a group of friends, with clear training steps consisting of:
- Warm up to prepare the body
- Build strength through weightlifting or gymnastics
- High-intensity training for 15 – 30 minutes
- Cool down and relax the body after exercise
Highlights: A varied, high-intensity exercise program that builds muscle strength along with the respiratory system. Suitable for teens, working-age adults, adults, and older adults. It emphasizes overall physical development more than competition
Preparation: Start by learning basic movements correctly, such as Squat, push, and pull, to prevent injuries. Arrange an appropriate training schedule, dividing sessions into strength-building and cardio-focused to avoid excessive fatigue. Practice breathing and pace control during exercise so you can keep going until the end. Emphasize carbohydrates before training and protein after training for recovery. Stretch regularly to help reduce soreness and prevent injuries.
VO2 max Measure your fitness
VO2 max testing measures the body’s maximum oxygen consumption during exercise, helping you understand your exercise capacity and choose suitable workouts or competitions. It helps improve exercise efficiency. The test is performed on a treadmill (Treadmill) using equipment that calculates VO2 max to assess fitness level, enabling appropriate training and fitness improvement.
