Stroke: Know the Symptoms, Causes, and Prevention Methods
Bangkok Hospital Pattaya

Stroke is a serious health threat that must be recognized promptly. Understanding its causes, symptoms, and prevention methods can help you protect your health and potentially save lives.

What is Stroke?

A stroke occurs when blood vessels in the brain become narrowed, blocked, or rupture, disrupting blood flow and preventing oxygen and nutrients from reaching brain tissue. This leads to rapid brain cell damage.

Common symptoms include sudden loss of motor control such as limb weakness, difficulty speaking, or impaired balance.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death globally. Without timely medical intervention, it can lead to permanent disability or even death.

Types of Stroke

There are three main types of stroke:

  1. Ischemic Stroke – The most common type, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel due to fat, blood clots, or other substances, reducing blood flow to the brain.
  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke – Occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, leading to bleeding within the brain. This is often due to high blood pressure or trauma.
  3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – Also known as a “mini-stroke,” this involves a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms usually resolve within 24 hours, but it is still a warning sign that must not be ignored.

Stroke Symptoms: Warning Signs to Watch For

Stroke symptoms usually appear suddenly and are often severe. Quick recognition and action are critical. Use the BE FAST guideline to identify symptoms:

  • B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or dizziness
  • E – Eyes: Blurred or double vision
  • F – Face: Drooping on one side of the face or an uneven smile
  • A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm or leg
  • S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking clearly
  • T – Time: Time is crucial – seek emergency medical care immediately if any symptoms appear

Causes of Stroke

Several risk factors increase the likelihood of a stroke, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Heart disease
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • Chronic stress

Stroke Prevention Methods

You can lower your risk of stroke through healthy lifestyle choices and regular medical care:

  1. Engage in regular physical activity
  2. Limit intake of salty and high-fat foods
  3. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption
  4. Manage blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  5. Schedule annual health checkups

Early prevention is key—taking care of your health today can help you avoid stroke in the future.

Conclusion

Stroke is a critical medical emergency that requires immediate attention. By knowing the symptoms, understanding the causes, and taking steps to prevent it, you can reduce your risk and help protect those around you.
