MIS-C, a Serious Condition in Children Associated With COVID-19

MIS-C and “Long COVID” are words commonly found in social media these days. It is a serious condition that occurs after children have recovered from COVID-19. When they develop MIS-C, different body parts and multiple organ systems become inflamed. Without quick and intensive treatment, children might be at greater risk of death.

Within 2–6 weeks after recovery, parents should monitor for signs of inflammation.

    Symptoms of MIS-C

    • Fever
    • Irregular heartbeat
    • Chest pain
    • Difficulty in breathing
    • Severe stomach pain
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Drowsiness
    • Seizure
    • Headache
    • Skin rash
    • Red eyes
    • Swollen tongue

If your child shows any of these symptoms, take them to a physician immediately. Early treatment helps reduce inflammation and the risk of severe complications.

    MIS-C – What Is It?

According to Dr. Anjana Sachabudhawong, MD, a pediatrician at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, MIS-C is a condition where two or more organ systems become inflamed, potentially leading to organ failure.

Children often develop MIS-C symptoms 2–6 weeks after recovering from COVID-19. Though the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to be due to an overactive immune response.

Most MIS-C cases occur in children aged 5–9. Studies show that 1 in 3,000–5,000 children infected with COVID-19 develop MIS-C. Surprisingly, 75% were previously healthy. MIS-C severity is not related to the severity of the original COVID-19 infection.

The first case of MIS-C was reported in the UK in April 2020. Since then, it has been reported globally, including in Thailand.

    How Is MIS-C Diagnosed?

    • Blood test: to check for inflammation and infection.
    • Echocardiogram: to detect abnormalities in the coronary arteries.

    Suggestions for Parents

The best prevention is to avoid COVID-19 infection altogether.

After recovery, closely monitor your child for 2–6 weeks. Seek medical attention immediately if any symptoms appear.

Not all children who get COVID-19 will develop MIS-C. However, parents must stay vigilant. Preventing infection is the most effective way to protect children.
