Protecting Elderly Eyes with Timely Treatment of “Cataracts”
When elderly people in our family reach the age of 50 and above, the “crystalline lens” often starts to become cloudy, resulting in blurred vision. These symptoms are often signs of cataracts, which should prompt a visit to an ophthalmologist for timely cataract surgery.
What is a cataract?
- A condition where the crystalline lens deteriorates and becomes cloudy, obstructing light from fully reaching the retina.
- Commonly found in people aged 50 and above.
- Contributing factors: Prolonged UV exposure, diabetes, high blood pressure, steroids, eye injuries, inflammation, etc.
- Key symptoms: Blurred vision, double vision, seeing light scatter, especially at night or in bright light.
When should it be treated?
If the cataract becomes cloudy enough to interfere with daily life, such as driving, reading, or watching TV, surgery should be performed without waiting for it to mature fully, as complications may arise.
Cataract Surgery Methods
- Phacoemulsification – Cataract dissolution using high-frequency ultrasound through a small incision <1.5 cm. No stitches required, short recovery time, can return home immediately.
- Extracapsular extraction – Wide incision surgery suitable for very hard cataracts, requiring about 3–7 stitches.
After surgery, the patient will wear an eye shield and see the doctor for a check-up the next day. If both eyes need surgery, they can usually be done simultaneously, based on the patient’s preference and the doctor’s consideration.
