What is an Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)?
An Electrocardiogram, commonly known as ECG or EKG, is one of the oldest, most convenient, fastest, and least invasive methods for evaluating heart function. The procedure is simple, painless, and provides valuable preliminary information for diagnosing heart conditions with high accuracy.
ECG serves as the “first line of defense” for individuals who may be at risk of heart disease and helps physicians determine the most appropriate next steps for further cardiac evaluation.
Examination Procedure & Preparation
No Special Preparation Required
No fasting or special preparation is needed before the examination. Patients can undergo the test at any time.
Examination Duration
Approximately 20–30 minutes
What Can an ECG Reveal About Heart Health?
The ECG tracing reflects the electrical activity within the heart muscle, including heart rate and rhythm regularity. It also demonstrates the relationship between the upper and lower chambers of the heart.
ECG can help diagnose various heart conditions and abnormalities, including:
- Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
- Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH)
- Cardiomyopathy
- Pericarditis
- Cardiac Arrhythmias (Bradyarrhythmia / Tachyarrhythmias)
- Electrolyte Imbalances, such as abnormal potassium or calcium levels
In addition, ECG is an important component used alongside other cardiac investigations, such as:
- Exercise Stress Test (EST)
- 24-Hour Holter Monitoring
- Cardiac Catheterization and Coronary Angiography
- Cardiac CT Scan / Cardiac MRI
Risks and Safety
ECG is a highly safe, non-invasive procedure with no significant risks or complications. The examination is painless and comfortable throughout the process.
Who Should Undergo an ECG Screening?
To support effective heart health care for individuals in Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand, the Heart Center at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai recommends ECG screening for the following groups:
Individuals with Symptoms
People experiencing symptoms such as:
- Chest pain or chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Unusual fatigue
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness, fainting, or unexplained loss of consciousness
Individuals with Risk Factors
People with the following conditions or risk factors:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes mellitus
- High cholesterol
- Smoking history
- Family history of coronary artery disease
Recommended Screening by Age Group
Ages 35–40
It is recommended to have at least one ECG examination as a baseline record for future comparison.
Ages 40 and Above
Regular ECG screening every 1–2 years is recommended, as the risk of coronary artery disease increases with age.
Ages 60 and Above
Annual ECG screening is recommended as part of a comprehensive senior health check-up.
