Eyelid Spa Treatment
Eyelid warming, massaging and cleansing to relieve dry eye syndrome
Eyelid spa is comprised of eyelid warming, eyelid massaging and eyelid cleansing. The treatment goal is to alleviate eye irritation and dry eye that result from meibomian gland dysfunction. Prior to receiving this service from our well trained nurses specialized in eyelid care, a comprehensive ophthalmic examination and diagnosis must be obtained from ophthalmologists whether an eyelid spa is applicable. Immediately after applying the warmth that helps to unplug any blocked glands, eyelid massage is applied to push out the lipid fluid from the meibomian glands located in the edge of both upper and lower eyelids. Massaging devices used during eyelid massing to squeeze the lipid that obstructs the glands include glass rods or other ophthalmic devices and cotton buds.
Candidates for Eyelid Spa
Eyelid spa is highly recommended in people who have any of these following conditions:
- Dry eye, eye irritation or fatigued eye.
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses accompanied with eye discomfort and dry eye.
- Small, rubbery nodule present at the edge of eyelid near the base of eyelashes caused by a blocked meibomian gland and trapped oil buildup in the gland.
- Eye irritation, itching and scaling of eyelids caused by an increase of eyelash mites (dermodex) that live within eyelash follicles.
- Regular eye makeup.
Eyelid spa is also advised in patients who are planning to undergo eye surgeries e.g. LASIK and cataract surgery. Nevertheless, before receiving eyelid spa, a comprehensive eye examination is required, allowing for an appropriate treatment plan for each individual patient. Besides eyelid spa, medications and artificial tear drops might be further prescribed as necessary.
Eyelid spa procedures
- Patient needs to lie down on the back. Specialized nurse gently places eyelid warming device (warming goggles) to loosen the oily fluid trapped in the eyelids for approximately 10 minutes, or as directed by an ophthalmologist.
- After applying warm compress, eyelids will be cleaned and nurse begins to massage the eyelid by using glass rods, ophthalmic devices and cotton buds to push out clogged lipid that obstructs the meibomian glands on the edge of eyelids.
- After eyelid massaging has been completed, the eyelids are then cleaned gently with eyelid cleansing foam, staring from the inner corner to the outer corner. After cleansing is completed, the foam will be wiped away.
- Eyelid spa takes approximately 30-40 minutes.
