The major artery, aorta, is the main artery that carries blood from the heart to various parts of the body. This artery can enlarge (aneurysm), a condition medically referred to as an aortic aneurysm, essentially a blood-filled bulge, and the abdominal area is the most common location for finding an aortic aneurysm.
The condition of an aortic aneurysm will progressively increase; the larger it gets, the weaker the blood vessel wall becomes, and the risk of the artery rupturing also increases accordingly. If an aortic rupture occurs, the patient’s survival rate is very low, with an average of 1 in 4 patients surviving after such an occurrence.
If an aortic aneurysm in the abdominal area is detected, surgeons will recommend treatment through surgery.
