Tips for Healthy Living in Phuket

The Pearl of the Andaman is one of the most popular islands in the world. Here’s are a few tips on how to stay healthy during your time there from the doctors at the Internal Medicine Clinic.

Get some sun (but not too much!)

While it’s true that exposure to sunlight causes your body to produce vitamin D, which is essential to the formation and maintenance of strong, healthy bones, it’s easy to get too much. Protect yourself from harmful UV rays, which lead to certain types of skin cancers, by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and staying in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

    Eat lots of seafood

This one’s easy. Locals on Phuket have abundant access to an enormous variety of seafood and a seemingly infinite number of delicious ways to prepare it. Whether you’re dining on squid, Phuket rock lobster, tiger prawns, or any of the species of fish swimming just off the coastline, you’ll get a hefty dose of protein with relatively few calories. Just be sure to stick to heart-healthy preparations like grilling instead of deep-frying. Think of it as the perfect excuse for a beachside barbecue.

    Don’t overdo it

It’s no secret that Phuket is one of the region’s most popular nightlife hubs. In recent years, the options have only multiplied and grown more sophisticated—think stylish beach clubs reminiscent of Miami with international DJs and fancy cocktails. If you’re on vacation and want to have fun in the sun, there’s nothing wrong with hitting the town on occasion. The only trouble is that when there are so many places to party, it can be easy to overindulge. If you do go out, pay close attention to your alcohol consumption and balance out boozy beverages by sipping carbonated water with lime throughout the evening.

Steer clear of motorbikes unless you’re an experienced driver

Taxis on Phuket are expensive compared to the mainland, which is why the idea of saving money by renting a motorbike can seem tempting. Unfortunately, many tourists end up in the hospital each year for precisely this reason. Road conditions in Phuket vary and not all drivers obey the speed limits, meaning it’s always safer to spend a few extra baht and hire a driver.

Stay safe when going for a swim

Especially if you’re at the beach with the little ones, it’s important to pay attention to safety. Even seemingly placid waters can harbour dangerous undertows or jellyfish. Always swim or wade in the designated areas with a certified lifeguard nearby.
