No one likes getting the flu, but while this common virus may be a minor inconvenience for some, it can be dangerous for others. Stay safe and healthy with these simple tips.

    1. Get a flu shot

No matter what else you do, be sure not to skip this vital step. Getting your annual flu vaccine is the best way to avoid the flu. Even though influenza is a fairly common virus, it can lead to serious consequences, especially for the young, the elderly, or anyone with a compromised immune system. You might not fall into any of these categories, but getting a flu shot will protect those around you who do.

    2. Make sure to get plenty of rest

Your body’s immune system is a powerful force, but it can only function optimally under the proper conditions. Sleep is absolutely essential to recharge those internal batteries and give your body the strength it needs to fight off viruses and bacterial infections. The optimal sleep for most adults is between 7 and 8 hours each night and for teenagers around 10 hours.

    3. Wash your hands

Washing your hands with soap can make a big difference in your overall health. Be conscientious about making it a regular practice, especially if anyone around you happens to have a cold or the flu.

    4. Refrain from touching your face

Your eyes, ears, nose and mouth all offer bacteria and viruses an easy entry point into the rest of your body. Even if you’re careful about washing your hands, avoid touching any of these areas with them.

    5. Steer clear of sick people

Let’s say your friend has just come down with the flu and you’d like to pay them a visit to wish them well — don’t. Send a card or flowers and wait until they’re on the mend and no longer contagious before seeing them in person.

    6. Stay out of the office when you feel ill

You might feel like it’s your duty to go to work no matter what, but the chances are high that your coworkers would prefer that you stay home instead of sneezing and coughing everywhere. If you have the flu, do the respectful thing and help prevent everyone else from getting it.

    7. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables

Vitamin C is a boon to the immune system that can help you fight off all sorts of diseases and infections. Luckily, it’s easy to find, especially in a country like Thailand, where delicious, wholesome fruits and veggies grow year round. Mangoes, papayas, watermelons, pineapples, morning glory, long beans, Chinese broccoli, and other diet staples will help keep you maintain your health through flu season
