VMAT is a new technology in radiation therapy.
It delivers a high dose of radiation to cover the tumor while minimizing the potential side effects of radiation exposure to normal tissue.
With VMAT, the radiation machine rotates around the patient during treatment. The rotation speed and the shape of the radiation shield can be adjusted to cover the tumor as closely as possible. All data is captured and calculated by a highly efficient computer for treatment planning by a specialist. Furthermore, a 3D image-guided system is used to determine the location of the tumor before radiation therapy, resulting in a more accurate and precise treatment.
VMAT requires less time.
VMAT reduces the duration of each radiation treatment by 2-8 times. Compared to current intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which typically requires a patient to remain in bed for approximately 15-30 minutes, VMAT can complete the treatment in just 3-5 minutes. This not only saves patients from prolonged bed rest, it also reduces errors caused by movement errors or internal organ displacement, and reduces various side effects. It also increases patient comfort and saves time. In addition, less radiation exposure also results in fewer complications affecting surrounding organs.
