The memo came down from “up top” somewhere that my article for the October e-newsletter was needed. Now, I generally need some sort of stimulus to find a topic for these, but I am sure you are tired of hearing about my knee op, so I decided to research October – the 8th month – which is why it gets the “octo” in common with the octopus.
So, turning to Mr. Google (the patron saint of writers and scribblers) I found that October was special for the following:
- Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
- American Pharmacist Month
- Apple Jack Month
- Awareness Month
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month
- Clergy Appreciation Month
- Computer Learning Month
- Cookie Month
- Domestic Violence Awareness Month
- Eat Country Ham Month
- International Drum Month
- Lupus Awareness Month
- National Diabetes Month
- National Pizza Month
- National Vegetarian Month
- National Popcorn Popping Month
- Sarcastic Month
- Seafood Month
So discounting the medical ones (breast cancer, Lupus, Diabetes) that left me with special days to be celebrated (obviously by a bunch of loonies). American Pharmacist Month for example. They never had it so good, even all the tablets are counted out for them and are in blister packs. And for this onerous task they need a ‘special day’? Of course, let us not forget National Popcorn Popping Month for which you have been anxiously waiting all year.
Have we all gone mad? Well, you might have, but I am grimly hanging onto the reins of sanity, amongst all this nonsense.
Mind you, Sarcastic Month is worth the run it’s getting here, that’s for sure.
However, since the folk at the top will expect something of a medical nature from me, ladies have a mammogram and if you are overweight, get your blood sugar checked. Lupus? That’s a bit more difficult, but pointers towards that diagnosis can be found in your annual check-up.
