I lost my dear old Mum two years ago. I still miss her. She was 94, which is a splendid innings, but her last two years were not such fun. She had the progressive blindness called Age-related Macular Degeneration, so she could no longer read books easily, or even watch TV. Her hearing had also gradually failed, so she could no longer even listen to the telly. Mobility was a problem and she walked very slowly with a Zimmer frame. She even used to say,
“What am I doing here? I’ve passed my use-by date!” My Mum was always pragmatic.
So what about your Mum? I sincerely hope that your Mum is alive and enjoys good health. And even more importantly, will continue to enjoy that good health.
As you get older (and your Mum is obviously older than you) and so you are faced with the realization that health is one of the most important factors in enjoying life. Money most certainly isn’t everything.
Going back to my Mum, she lived in a sleepy little fishing village in the north of Scotland. No real facilities, no movie theatre, and even the fishing museum closed down through lack of interest.
However it had a library and a Post Office and her joy in life was posting her letters and then going to the public library to read. Money was not needed for her simple lifestyle. But ‘health’ was.
Each year the hospital has special packages for ladies, designed to keep your Mum in the good health you want for her. By signing up for the package, there are ‘healthy’ discounts for proceedures such as mammograms and Pap smears, for example. I am sure there will be details at the foot of this newsletter.
And if I may, “Happy Mother’s Day” to your Mum, the most important person in your life.
