Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty... Less Pain, Faster Recovery

Hemorrhoids are a common health problem that can affect people of all ages, both men and women. They can impact a person’s quality of life—causing not only physical discomfort but also emotional stress, loss of confidence, and embarrassment. In some cases, if left untreated or not properly managed, symptoms can become more severe. Today, advancements in medical technology offer a less painful and more efficient treatment option: Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty. This modern approach helps reduce pain and allows for a quicker recovery than traditional hemorrhoidectomy.

Dr. Sarit Suwanakijboriharn, our general surgeon at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shares that hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal area that become swollen due to prolonged straining. Over time, they can enlarge and swell, eventually forming protruding lumps around the anus.

Causes of hemorrhoids include increased abdominal pressure from constipation and diarrhea—straining during childbirth, lifting heavy objects, or sitting on the toilet for extended periods, especially while reading or using a mobile phone.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids include passing fresh blood during defecation. In some cases, blood loss can be significant enough to cause anemia. Other symptoms are lumps that appears after passing stool, itching around the anus, and pain in the anal area.

Hemorrhoids are divided into two types: External hemorrhoids appear as swollen lumps around the anus that can be felt at all times and often cause pain. Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the anus and are divided into 4 stages:

    • Stage 1: Small bulges in the anus. It can only be detected during a medical examination.
    • Stage 2: Hemorrhoids protruded during bowel movements but retracts spontaneously back inside.
    • Stage 3: Hemorrhoids protrude and require manual reduction.
    • Stage 4: Hemorrhoids protrude permanently and are irreducible.

Treatment for hemorrhoids begin with lifestyle modifications. These include drinking plenty of water, eating high fiber diet such as fruits and vegetables, and reducing the time spent on the toilet. It’s also important to avoid reading or using a mobile phone while in the bathroom. In some cases, non-surgical treatments include oral medication or suppositories may be recommended.

For patients with large hemorrhoids or heavy bleeding, surgery may be necessary. The traditional hemorrhoidectomy involves the surgical removal of hemorrhoids. Today, a newer option is available—Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty. This advanced technology helps reduce pain by using heat from the laser to seal the veins that supply the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and eventually disappear. Laser surgery is suitable for treating internal hemorrhoids.

The benefits of laser surgery are that it causes very little pain after the procedure, has minimal side effects, and requires only 1–2 days of recovery, allowing patients to return to work and daily activities quickly.

Dr. Sarit also shares that, “It’s important to see a doctor who truly understands the condition and can recommend the most suitable treatment for each person. Laser treatment is a modern option that works well for both early and advanced stages of hemorrhoids. It offers less pain and faster recovery. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms need medical attention, I recommend coming in early. Hemorrhoids are nothing to be embarrassed about. If we catch them in Stage 1 or 2, they can often be treated without surgery.”
