Even small changes in your breasts deserve attention—whether it is a lump, a change in the skin, or nipple discharge. Although most of these changes are not caused by cancer, it is important to see a doctor to find out the cause. Do not wait until you feel pain before getting checked. Breast cancer often causes no pain and may have no symptoms in its early stages.

6 Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

    1. A new lump in the breast or armpit
If you notice a lump or an area that feels thicker than usual, see a doctor for an assessment—even if it is painless. Touch alone cannot reliably determine what kind of lump it is.

    2. A change in breast size or shape
Look for swelling in one breast, a change in its shape, or any change that differs from what is normal for you.

    3. Dimpling, puckering, or pulling of the breast skin
New dimpling or skin that resembles an orange peel should be checked, even if you cannot feel a distinct lump.

    4. A nipple that turns inward or changes direction
If a nipple that previously pointed outward begins to turn inward or appears pulled in, consult a doctor to find out the cause.

    5. Fluid or blood coming from the nipple
Nipple discharge other than breast milk, especially discharge containing blood, should be assessed by a doctor. Do not assume it is simply due to hormonal changes.

    6. Unusual redness, swelling, or peeling of the breast or nipple skin
A persistent rash, crusting, or changes around the nipple and areola should be examined. These changes can have several causes, including breast conditions that require treatment.

    Does Breast Pain Mean Cancer?

Breast pain can be caused by hormonal changes before a period, cysts, or other conditions unrelated to cancer, so pain alone is not a reason to panic. However, if the pain persists or occurs alongside other changes, see a doctor. Having no pain does not necessarily mean your breasts are healthy.

What Should You Do If You Notice a Change?

Make an appointment with a doctor promptly to discuss your medical history and have a breast examination. Even if your most recent mammogram was normal, any new change should still be assessed.

Your doctor will recommend appropriate tests, such as a diagnostic mammogram, an ultrasound, or a biopsy if a suspicious finding is identified. These tests help distinguish noncancerous conditions from breast cancer and guide appropriate care.

Even Without Symptoms, Screening Still Matters

Knowing what is normal for your breasts can help you notice changes, but it does not replace screening. Early breast cancer may cause neither a noticeable lump nor other symptoms. Talk to your doctor about the screening that is appropriate for you.

“If you find a lump, notice a change, or have nipple discharge, don’t wait for pain before getting checked.”

Paying attention to your body’s warning signs and seeking timely assessment is the first step toward caring for your breast health.
