Who said back pain only occurs in the elderly? Such thinking seems to be “outdated” from the records of the “Back Pain Club,” where you may currently be sitting and working with a grimace on your face.
It’s not surprising that most members of that club are us, the current working or office population. This is primarily due to incorrect working styles and lifestyles that do not adhere to ergonomic principles, making back pain one of the most common ailments found in the working age group. It disrupts good times throughout the day, whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, making you carry pain with you at all times and potentially becoming a reason that eventually affects work efficiency.
The good news that office workers often don’t know is that there is another option for those suffering from back pain besides taking medication, physical therapy, or surgery. We also have a treatment called “Epidural steroid injection,” which research indicates can help relieve back pain for at least 3 months. This epidural steroid injection also helps doctors diagnose the precise location of the disease causing the back pain more accurately.
For patients receiving epidural steroid injections, when combined with medication and physical therapy, if their back pain improves in order, there’s no need to waste money and time on surgery. However, for those whose symptoms improve after the steroid injection but experience back pain again, and if diagnosed by a specialist as needing surgical treatment, those patients have a more likely chance to achieve satisfactory results compared to those who have never had the steroid injection before.
Back pain problems depend on the condition and stage of the disease, including individual patient factors. Therefore, those experiencing symptoms should consult a specialist in neurology and spine as soon as symptoms are noticed to explore joint treatment options. Because if it’s delayed, the only remaining option might be “surgery” only!
