Staying Safe During the Festive Season
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai

In the upcoming season of holly and jolly sentiments like Yi Peng (Loy Krathong Festival), Christmas, or even New Year’s,
we’ll enjoy the year’s end with loved ones—but above all, let’s stay safe.

According to statistics, accidents spike over the holidays—car crashes, falls from heights, sports mishaps—all leaving minor to serious injuries.
But if you—or someone else—sustain a large, bleeding wound, stay calm and get to a specialist immediately!

An “open fracture” isn’t always a big gash showing white bone; watch for other signs:
inability to move the limb or obvious deformity. If you can still drive, head to the
Trauma Center of Excellence, Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai,
or call 1719 for our 24/7 ambulance.

With an open fracture, the risk of infection can rise up to 30%—depending on wound severity and contamination.
Left untreated, bacteria can spread through the bloodstream, leading to life-threatening sepsis.

Initially, doctors will diagnose, give IV antibiotics, administer tetanus vaccine, clean the wound, and operate ASAP.

We can do surgery within 6 hours of arrival—minimizing pain, infection risk, and overall recovery time.

Dr. Thanawat Buranaphatthana,
orthopedic surgeon, will assess severity, contamination, and wound type. There are two scenarios:

  • Scenario 1:
Minor wound from a low-impact accident—surgeon cleans and applies an internal fixation device in one
    procedure, without general anesthesia.
  • Scenario 2:
Severe injury with a large, dirty wound—surgeon cleans and applies an external fixator initially.
Once swelling subsides and the wound improves, an internal repair is performed later.

With best wishes for a safe holiday season from
