Pregnant mothers are more likely to have hemorrhoids than most people, especially those who have constipation – hard stool and straining while defecating – have higher chances of developing hemorrhoids.  This may cause tears and bleeding, thus expectant moms should take note and consult a doctor as soon as possible.

    Why Pregnant Moms Have Hemorrhoids

    • Enlarged uterus. Pregnant women have enlarged uterus that can press down on the abdominal veins, causing the blood vessels around the anus and rectum to swell.
    • Hormones. During pregnancy, women produce lots of hormones and the veins may expand, causing blood deposits.
    • Constipation can cause pregnant women to strain during bowel movement, leading to hemorrhoids. When constipated, the stool will be harder and can cause pain and bleeding during defecation.
    • Prolonged sitting or standing causes hemorrhoid when blood gathers in the rectum.

    Watchful Signs

Pregnant moms who develop hemorrhoids have the following symptoms:

    • Pain inside or around the anus
    • Swelling around the anus
    • Palpable mass around the anus
    • Bleeding
    • Pain during bowel movement which may be accompanied by bleeding
    • Hard stool and incomplete bowel movement
    • Constipation

    Treating Pregnant Moms with Hemorrhoids

Pregnant moms affected by hemorrhoids should not take over the counter medication, but rather, should consult a physician for the right treatment. The doctor may prescribe an enema, ointment or medication to relief the symptoms. In pregnant moms with advanced hemorrhoidal pain, the doctor may choose an analgesic as well.

Sleeping on Your Side to Relief Hemorrhoids

Pregnant moms should sleep on your side for better blood flow. The uterus will not press down on the blood vessels inside the abdomen and the intestines. Sleep on your side every 2 – 3 hours to alleviate abdominal pressure. Furthermore, sleeping face down with your knees close to your chest or abdomen or sleep in the prone position with your knees tucked in for 10 – 15 minutes in the evening will help with better blood flow from the rectum.

    Preventing Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

    • Immediately defecate when there is an urge
    • Do not strain during bowel movement
    • Drink lots of water. Sip water throughout the day.
    • Do regular light exercise, such as yoga or stretching.
    • Change your postion regularly
    • Do not do heavy lifting
    • Do not squat for a long time
    • Sleep on your side
    • Refrain from consuming tea, coffee, soda, or alcholic beverages

Hemorrhoids during pregnancy is not serious, but is more common than most people. It may be cumbersome to expectant moms. Therefore, pay attention, self-observe, and seek medical attention as soon as possible to alleviate the severity.
