Dental health problems are considered one of the most common Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) among the elderly and those with underlying diseases. This can lead to complications that affect their quality of life in the long run. It is advisable to see a dentist regularly for early prevention and treatment at early stages.

Diabetes: can lead to dental problems

Diabetes patients tend to face with complications all over the body, e.g. heart, blood vessels, nervous system, eyes, kidneys, oral health. The severity will depend on blood sugar control, types of diabetes and patient behavior. Common dental problems in diabetes patients include:

    • Gum inflammation
    • Tooth decay
    • Oral fungal infections
    • Tooth loss

Oral infections: lead to complications in other body parts

The oral cavity is full of blood vessels expanding through gum and jaw areas. Each tooth has dental pulp supported by a cluster of blood vessels and nerves. Failure to maintain good oral health can lead to oral inflammation and infections that trigger serious health conditions all over the body.

    • Heart valve inflammation that can be fatal
    • Thickening/narrowing of arteries that lead to a heart attack
    • Clotted blood vessels in the brain that lead to paralysis

Gum disease: leads to heart disease

Those with gum or tooth disease are found to be at 2 times greater risk of heart disease, compared with healthy persons. Bacteria from gum disease may get into blood circulation and cause blood clots in heart arteries, resulting in myocardial infarction. Gum inflammation also causes plaques inside heart arteries to get thicker and obstruct blood flow. Common oral health problems that can lead to heart disease include:

    • Gum inflammation
    • Tooth decay
    • Impacted tooth with gum inflammation
