10 years ago if someone metioned treatment for short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hyperopia), the general feeling was that such endeavours were not possible. However, technological advancements have turned something once considered impossible into something very treatable through the use of LASIK (Laser in situ keratomileusis).
"I have worn glasses since 8th grade, at the time it did not feel like a hassle except of course when I played sports, and especially if I went swimming or scuba diving as my vision will be impaired" Orthopedic Surgery expert Pornthep Mamanee M.D. said in an interview for Living 360. "I didn't like to wear contact lens because they were a fuss, until ten years ago when there were advancements in treatment for short-sightedness, namely LASIK. I became very interested and wanted to give this treatment a try, however a number of my friends had it done and there were numerous side effects such as blurred vision when looking into bright light and difficulty driving at night. Many said that the treatment was not as effective as they thought it would be. Because of the feedback I received and my occupation as a surgeon requiring good eye function, I did not want to risk anything so I backed out of the treatment."
Many years passed and Dr. Pornthep began to experience more and more problems with long-sightedness while the myopia remained. Simply wearing glasses proved difficult because of complications of both myopia and hyperopia at the same time.
"I began thinking about LASIK once again. Coincidentally, at the time Bangkok Hospital's LASIK Center had just introduced a new machine called Femto LASIK. I proceeded to consult with a friend who is an ophthalmologist working in the United States. He informed me that they use LASIK as a treatment there and that it was very popular, upon further discussion I learned that the new machine that had just arrived at Bangkok Hospital was the same model as the one that was used in the States. My friend suggested if you ever to do LASIK, this was the machine to try it with, because it is the most advanced technology in the field and has little to no side effects. As such, I decided to give it a go."
Dr. Pornthep received full treatment for both short and long sightedness, of the treatment proccess he revealed, "I didn't even know when they were done. There was no pain or any sensation whatsoever, it was as if I just went for a normal eye test, and you just relax and listen to the doctor. Within a few minutes the doctor informed me that the proccess was complete. The next day I was able to go to work, when I woke up I was able to see as clearly as when I put on glasses. I consider the money I spent on LASIK treatment as the best investment I have ever made in my life. It has been three months since the treatment and I am very happy with the results."
