Nipah Virus Alert – A Disease to Watch in India
The world is currently monitoring the outbreak of Nipah Virus, which has become a major concern after cases were reported in India (Kerala and West Bengal). The outbreak has led to deaths and hundreds of high-risk contacts under quarantine. The concern lies in its high fatality rate of 40–75%, and currently there is no specific treatment or vaccine.
What is Nipah Virus?
It is a virus that can cause severe encephalitis (brain inflammation) and is classified as a zoonotic disease (transmitted from animals to humans).
Although outbreaks occur abroad, awareness and preparedness are the best protection.
