The Siriroj Guide to a Healthy Day at the Beach

    Updated on: 22 Sep 2025

A day on the beach is one of the best things about a visit to Thailand. Here’s some advice from the medical professionals at Bangkok Hospital Siriroj’s Wellness Center about how to stay safe while enjoying a little fun in the sun.

Wear sunscreen and remember to reapply.

Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can dramatically increase your risk of developing skin cancer (plus, no one wants a sunburn). Always bring sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and remember to reapply every hour or each time you go in the water.

Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

At noon, Thailand’s sun is incredibly strong. When it’s getting too hot out, grab your beach book and head for the shade.

    Bring a sunhat and glasses.

Even if you’re already wearing sunscreen on your face, a hat offers extra skin protection and the sunglasses will help protect your eyes.

Pay attention to where your family members are at all times.

The beach is an exciting place, especially if you’re a small child. As tempting as it may be for little ones to wander, it can often land them in trouble. Make sure you watch where your children are in order to keep them away from harm.

    Don’t swim out too far.

Looks can be deceiving and even a seemingly peaceful ocean can harbour unseen undertows and currents. Even if you think you’re a strong swimmer, stay within the designated swimming areas.

    Drink lots of water.

Even if you’re by the ocean, a tropical climate like Thailand’s carries a real risk of heat stroke and dehydration. Always drink lots of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
