Blood in urine, trouble urinating, and decreased force in stream of urine are signs of “prostate cancer” in older men

The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ that produces the seminal plasma and provides a suitable environment for sperms. The size of the prostate grows in line with age and the amount of testosterone.

Some prostate cancer risk factors are:

    • Old age: Prostate cancer is more common in men over the age of 50.
    • Genetic factors: A man has a much higher risk of developing prostate cancer if his family member has or has had the disease compared to other men.
    • Nationality: African-American men have higher risk of prostate cancer.
    • Diet: A diet high in red meat or high-fat meat may increase a person’s chances of developing prostate cancer.

    Signs

    • Early-stage prostate cancer usually shows no signs. Signs of prostate cancer most often show up later after the cancer spreads to other areas of the body. Without treatment as time passes by, other trouble urinating signs will show up such as
    • Urinary retention
    • Blood in the urine
    • Urinating more often especially at night
    • Pain during urination
    • A weak or slow urinary stream.

    Diagnosis

PSA screening test is a blood test to help detect prostate cancer. The results
will help diagnose the first stage of prostate cancer.

    Treatment

    • There are ways to treat prostate cancer. These include open surgery, minimally invasive surgery.
    • Radiotherapy

Hormone therapy is done to control the spread of the cancer. It can be carried out are testicular surgery to reduce male hormones or injection to prevent hormone production as well as close follow-up.
