Although they are clever and adorable creatures, monkeys can bite, particularly if they feel threatened or need to protect their young or food. Adequate care is crucial since a monkey bite can result in wounds and increase the risk of infection, including rabies.

Dos

First aid for monkey bites

Seek immediate medical attention: Even if the wound seems small, after administering first aid, you must seek medical attention as soon as possible to have it evaluated, its severity determined, and receive the appropriate treatment, which may include:

Contact the authorities: You should contact the authorities immediately if you are bitten by a monkey in a public or tourist area so that necessary actions can be taken.

Symptoms of B virus infection: B virus infection in humans typically results from exposure to monkey secretions. Consequently, within a month of exposure, you should be closely monitored for the following symptoms.

  • Early stage: Flu-like symptoms like fever, chills, muscle aches and fatigue
  • Middle stage: Small blisters around the wound or contact area
  • Late stage: The virus invades the nervous system, causing inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, and neurological symptoms like seizures, paralysis, unconsciousness, and possibly death.

Don’ts

  1. Keep the wound clean: Dirty wound has higher risk of infection.
  2. Avoid scratching or picking the wound: Scratching or picking the wound can exacerbate its infection and make it bigger.
  3. Do not neglect your wound: Even if the wound seems small, you must seek medical attention as soon as possible in order to avoid any possible complications.

Prevention

  • Avoid feeding monkeys: Monkeys may approach and become more aggressive if you feed them.
  • Do not provoke or harm monkeys: Monkeys may feel threatened when provoked or harmed, and they may bite in defense.
  • Maintain your distance: Always stay a safe distance away from monkeys, especially if they are unknown to you or have young with them.
  • Take extra precautions during mating season: During the mating season, monkeys are typically more aggressive.

Being bitten by a monkey can be an unpleasant experience, but proper and prompt medical attention can reduce the risk of infection and other complications. If you or someone close to you has been bitten by a monkey, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.
