Don’t Dismiss Thyroid Disorders!
Thyroid nodules refer to abnormal growths—either solitary or multiple—that develop within one or both lobes of the thyroid gland. These nodules are classified into two primary types:
- Non-toxic Thyroid Adenoma
- Toxic Thyroid Adenoma
Both types can disrupt normal hormone production, potentially leading to conditions of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Moreover, if a nodule is malignant, it may progress to thyroid carcinoma, which can compromise the overall function of the body.
What Happens If Left Untreated?
In general, thyroid nodules carry a 5–15% risk of malignancy. Without appropriate treatment, malignant cells may invade adjacent structures—such as the trachea, larynx, and esophagus—resulting in:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Hoarseness
- Choking sensations
- Painful swallowing or breathing difficulties
Additionally, the cancer may spread to the cervical lymph nodes, or in some cases, metastasize via the bloodstream to distant organs like the lungs and bones.
