Discover Advanced Technologies for Treating Herniated Disc with Nerve Compression
There are several surgical techniques available for the treatment of herniated disc with nerve root compression. Traditionally, the standard open discectomy involves a midline incision measuring approximately 6–10 centimeters, depending on the patient’s body habitus and subcutaneous fat thickness. After making the incision, paraspinal muscles are carefully retracted to expose the vertebrae at the affected level. A tubular retractor system is then used to maintain muscle separation, allowing access to the spinal canal. Upon visualization of the compressed nerve root, surgical instruments are employed to gently mobilize the nerve medially, enabling the surgeon to identify and remove the herniated or extruded disc fragment responsible for nerve impingement. The incision is then closed in layers.
This traditional approach typically requires a hospital stay of 5–7 days and a postoperative recovery period of 4–6 weeks.
Modern advancements have since led to the development of microsurgical discectomy techniques, utilizing an operating microscope for enhanced precision and minimal tissue disruption. This minimally invasive approach significantly reduces recovery time, postoperative pain, and hospital stay duration.
