    What is HBOT?
    Bangkok Hospital Pattaya
    Updated on: 19 Sep 2025

    Overview of HBOT

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows your lungs to gather more oxygen than breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. This oxygen-rich environment promotes the body’s natural healing processes.

    Why HBOT is done?

    • Advanced wound healing
    • Increased oxygen delivery to injured tissue
    • Improved infection control
    • Greater blood vessel formation
    • Preservation of damaged tissue
    • Elimination and reduced effects of toxic substances
    • Reduction or elimination of gas bubble obstruction

    What to expect during HBOT:

    • You will be asked to remove any items that could create a spark, such as jewelry or electronic devices.
    • You will wear comfortable clothing and may be given a hospital gown to wear during the treatment.
    • You will lie down in a pressurized chamber.
    • The chamber will gradually be pressurized, which may cause your ears to pop, similar to the sensation experienced during air travel or scuba diving.
    • Once the chamber reaches the desired pressure, you will breathe 100%, typically 60 to 90 minutes.
    • During the treatment, you can relax, watch TV, or listen to music.

    Possible Side Effects:

Most people tolerate HBOT well and experience no significant side effects. However, some people may experience:

    • Ear discomfort or pain (similar to airplane ear)
    • Temporary changes in vision, particularly in individuals with cataracts
    • Fatigue or lightheadedness immediately following treatment
    • Sinus discomfort or congestion

    Frequency and Duration of Treatment:

The frequency and duration of HBOT sessions vary depending on the condition being treated and the individual’s response to therapy. Some conditions may require daily treatments for several weeks, while others may only require a few sessions.

    Precautions:

Before undergoing HBOT, inform your healthcare provider if you:

    • Are pregnant
    • Have a history of lung or heart conditions
    • Have a history of ear surgery or ear problems
    • Have a history of seizures
    • Are taking any medications or supplements

    Conclusion:

HBOT is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions. If you think you could benefit from HBOT, discuss it with your healthcare provider to determine if it is the right option for you. They can provide you with more information and guidance tailored to your specific needs.
