Office Syndrome
It is neck, upper back, shoulder, and back pain from sitting at work or using a mobile phone for a long time
Medically, it is often associated with Myofascial Pain Syndrome or a condition in which muscles have tender points (Trigger Points).
Who is at risk?
- Sitting and working at a computer for long periods
- Continuous use of phone/tablet
- Poor posture
- Stress, insufficient rest
What are the symptoms?
- Tight, aching pain in the neck, upper back, and shoulders
- Pain radiating to the head or down the arm
- Pain at a specific spot when pressed
- Sometimes numbness
See a doctor if the pain persists for more than 2–4 weeks or if numbness is present.
How is it diagnosed?
The doctor takes a history, performs a physical examination, and palpates to find Trigger Points.
In some cases, additional tests may be done to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.
Treatment methods for Office Syndrome
Treatment often uses multiple methods together, including:
- Posture adjustment (Ergonomics) Arrange the desk, chair, and monitor appropriately to reduce underlying risk factors.
- Physical therapy Relax the muscles and teach exercises.
- Pain-relieving injection at the Trigger Point (Trigger Point Injection) Quickly reduces localized pain.
- Western acupuncture (Dry Needling) Stimulates Trigger Points without medication.
- Shockwave Therapy (Focus & Radial) Suitable for chronic symptoms.
- Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation (PMS) Magnetic waves stimulate nerves and muscles, reducing deep pain.
The doctor will assess and choose the most appropriate approach for each individual.
How to prevent it?
- Set up your workstation appropriately
- Take stretching breaks every 30–60 minutes
- Exercise to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles
- Reduce prolonged looking down at your phone
Summary
Office Syndrome is a common problem in working-age adults, but it can be treated.
If you have chronic neck, upper back, or shoulder pain, you should not leave it untreated for a long time. Early assessment helps make treatment easier and reduces recurrence.
