Get to know severe mitral regurgitation (Severe mitral regurgitation) by Dr. Pathomphon Ekarat, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Bangkok Hospital Hat Yai

Causes: It can result from degenerative/myxomatous changes of the valve structure (Degenerative/Myxomatous disease), rheumatic heart disease (Rheumatic Heart Disease), myocardial ischemia or infarction (Ischemic Heart Disease), including infection of the heart valve (Infective Endocarditis)

Symptoms and signs: A leaking heart valve causes shortness of breath, pulmonary edema, and heart failure

Valve characteristics: As shown in the video, it is caused by an abnormal valve structure due to ruptured chordae tendineae (Rupture chordae tendineae), causing the valve to lose its attachment
Treatment: In the video, the surgical method shown is valve repair by suturing new artificial attachments (Neo-chordae tendineae)

Photos have already been consented to by the patient and relatives
