The Importance of Annual Health Check-ups

Many people may not realize that “risk factors” that contribute to disease are all around us. The main factors that contribute to a healthy body include good nutrition, proper lifestyle habits (avoiding risk factors), and getting regular exercise. It is understandable that not everyone will be able to maintain these positive factors, let alone maintain them consistently throughout their lifetime. This is why it is important to have an annual health check-up. Determining the status of your bodily functions can help to identify any abnormalities before they can worsen, display symptoms, and pose a significant risk. Identification of issues allow for prompt treatment, which can – reduce complications that may lead to loss of life, and also helps you save on medical costs.

Dr. Akaraphan Suravilus, Director of Health Design Center at Bangkok Hospital says, “Normally, if there is no indication of illness people should seek to have a health check-up at least once a year. The tests and diagnosis methods will vary according to different ages and risk factors of diseases. This can be ascertained from an individual’s lifestyle habits, medical history, and family history. This is especially true for disease with clear risk factors such as genetic inheritance, exposure to stress, and being a smoker, to name but a few factors.”

Health Design Center aims to provide a comprehensive one-stop service for health check-up and health promotion. We want to provide you with “your personal guide to healthy living”, as each person will have a different set of risk factors. Our programs are personalized to suit each individual patient, with advice and consultation to allow for self-care at home. Health check-ups are performed by a team of specialists supported by advanced diagnostic technology with prompt service. Patients can expect to receive their results within the same day.

The Health Check-up begins with a multidimensional analysis, and identification of risk factors of disease multidimensional for each person. These may include lifestyle habits such as consumer behavior, stress from work, alcohol consumption, insomnia, etc. Past medical history, including a history of similar diseases will be taken into account and recorded as important data to be utilized in devising an appropriate health check-up program that is personalized for each patient.

An preliminary health check-up may include measuring blood pressure, pulse, and a physical examination conducted by personnel specialized in internal medicine. Other check-ups may include tests for body mass index, blood disorders, glucose levels, and cholesterol levels to determine the risk of heart disease, hypertension, risk of paralysis in the future. Other tests will examine kidney function, bone mineral density, uric acid, rheumatoid arthritis, and lung x-rays. Specific tests can also be conducted to determine the risk of specific diseases as necessary such as cancer in men and woman. This may include blood test to find prostate cancer for men or tests for liver or colon cancer in women. Cervical cancer can be diagnosed with a Thin-prep and breast cancer through a Digital Mammogram. Furthermore, as you get older more care should be provided with regards to risk of heart disease, which is increasing in Thailand.

Apart from using advanced diagnostic technology, there is a dialogue process where the patient is made to thoroughly understand the results of tests. Health Design Center emphasizes this aspect so that patients are able to receive appropriate advice in order that they can be proactive in improving their health.
