Testosterone Deficiency

photo

Old age usually refers to the period after the approximate retirement age for men. In Thailand, retirement is at 60 and in Europe over 65. Testosterone deficiency is prevalent in men of this age group; however it can also manifest much earlier.

4% of men may experience testosterone deficiency before reaching the age of 50, the number of men experiencing testosterone deficiency gradually increases due to the testicles slowly producing less testosterone causing physical and emotional changes. In women between 44-55, the ovaries stop producing estrogen, which leads to the cessation of menstruation. So in women, hormone production ceases entirely, whereas for men, testosterone decline is more gradual.

Symptoms

Older men who experience testosterone deficiency may have symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, weakness in muscles, reduced bone strength, and they may become easily agitated. These may lead to other problems such as family issues and work-related issues and will increase gradually over time. Most men will be unaware of these things being a result of declining testosterone.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy can be provided for males experiencing testosterone deficiency. It is a standardized treatment and has been shown to improve quality of life. Before the therapy can begin your doctor will perform a thorough health check-up and blood tests to determine that you indeed have testosterone deficiency.

Treatment for testosterone deficiency can include oral medication twice a day, which should be consumed with food that will help in absorption. There are also injections that can be administered every 3 weeks, as well as patches to be placed directly on the skin.

HRT Injections which can be given every 3 months meet international standards for safety. These are effective and convenient, especially for men who prefer not to take medication as well as being less expensive.
