Symptoms of GERD

A major indicator of GERD in adults is constant heartburn, characterized by pain in the chest area, in the middle of the stomach, tightness around the throat, and a burning sensation in the heart which can be often mistaken as a
symptom of heart disease.

In children below the age of 12 and some adults GERD may not cause heartburn; however other symptoms include dry cough, wheezing, and difficulty swallowing.

What Causes GERD?

The main contributor to GERD is a malfunction when stomach acid or,occasionally, stomach content, flows back into your esophagus. The reflux irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD. Research has shown that a tumor in the gastrointestinal tract can cause GERD. Other factors that contribute to GERD are:

  • Obesity

  • Pregnancy

  • Smoking

Foods that may cause GERD to worsen include:

  • Sour fruits

  • Chocolate

  • Caffeinated beverages and alcohol

  • Fried food and food high in cholesterol

  • Onions and Garlic

  • Food containing Mint

  • Food with strong tastes such as very salty, sour, or spicy

  • Food  containing tomatoes such as ketchup, spaghetti, or pizza
