Neurotransmitters and Depression

photo

Neurotransmitters and brain chemicals which allow communication between neurons a type of brain cell. The neurotransmitters that play an important role in depression include:

  1. Acetylcholine

  2. Serotonin

  3. Norepinephrine

  4. Dopamine

Recent findings in depression suggest a dysregulation in the dynamic and interactive relationship between neurotransmitters and receptors, which affects the neurons in the long term. However, depression is caused by the
interplay of many factors such as

  1. Genetics

  2. Psychosocial aspects which include:

  • Stresses arising from life events

  • Environment

  • Upbringing

  • Behavior

  • Personality
