Diabetes

photo

Diabetes is a disease in which the body has an abnormal level of blood sugar over an extended period of time. Symptoms may include the need to urinate often, feeling dehydrated, and bouts of hunger. Without treatment and care it may lead to complications such as heart disease, myocardial infarction (heart attack), kidney disease, and improper eye function.

Two Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes - results from the pancreas'failure to produce enough insulin. This form is commonly found in children or teenagers and involves an immune deficiency. Patients will require insulin injections for the rest of their lives

  • Type 2 Diabetes - begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to respond to insulin properly. As the disease progresses a lack of insulin may also develop. The primary cause is excessive body weight and not enough exercise. It is commonly found in adults aged 40 and above. In Thailand over 90% of diabetics have type 2. Here at Bangkok Hospital, offering the best treatment for diabetes requires the cooperation of a multidisciplinary medical team: experts on diabetes, nutritionists, and occupational therapists supported by advanced diagnostic equipment. Another important aspect is providing the patient with the necessary information needed for self-care.

Furthermore, if the patient has already developed complications as a result of regarding diabetes, a number of related and specialized medical staff and clinics is readily available for patient referral such as:

  • Ophthalmologists

  • Cardiologists

  • Pulmonologists

  • Surgeonss

  • Podiatry Clinics

Insulin Pump

  • An insulin pump is a small device about the size of a small cell phone that is worn externally and can be discreetly clipped to your belt, slipped into a pocket, or hidden under your clothes. It delivers precise doses of rapid-acting insulin to closely match your body’s needs. Small amounts of insulin can delivered continuously (24/7) for normal functions of the body (not including food). The programmed rate is determined by your healthcare professional.
