Inguinal Hernia or Groin Hernia in Men … occurs when tissue of the small intestine protrudes through a weakened spot in the abdominal wall. Risk factors include chronic cough from respiratory diseases such as pulmonary emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lifting heavy weights, exercise or activities which need the strength from abdominal muscle contraction such as sit-ups. Inguinal hernia is commonly found in men over 40 who have been also diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Due to the enlargement of prostate gland, it causes the strain during urination and increases an abdominal pressure. As a result, the muscles of abdominal wall become weakened and a part of small intestine protrudes through this weak area, presented as a bulge or lump at the groin. If inguinal hernia is left untreated, the protruding intestine can extend to the scrotum leading to life-threatening complications such as an increased pressure on surrounding tissues, femoral vessels and lymph nodes, incarcerated hernia (contents of the hernia obstruct the bowel, resulting in the inability to have a bowel movement) and strangulation which can lead to the death of the affected bowel tissue and surgery is immediately required.

If a bulge or lump has been found in the suspected area, do NOT wait. Medical attention is highly advised in order to accurately diagnose “inguinal hernia” and receive appropriate and timely treatments.
