Depression can be cured by treatments which do not require hospitalization, except for cases where patients are at risk and require close monitoring, extreme cases or cases where it is necessary to diagnose and isolate other health conditions. Correct treatment for each person may vary and in some case a combination of treatments might be requires.

  • Medications
  • Antidepressants: Nowadays, many types of antidepressants are available with reduced side effects and higher response rates. Patients and psychiatrists can work together in selecting the most appropriate type of antidepressant.

  • Other Medications: In some cases other types of medication can also be used, such as anti-anxiety medication, medication for attention deficit disorder, mood stabilizers, or anti-psychotics. The psychiatrist will take into account the patient’s responses to previous treatment when prescribing medication.
