Dr. Poramaporn Unveils BDMS Strategy Towards Medical Sustainability after Leading Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2023 (DJSI World and DJSI Emerging Markets) in Healthcare Providers & Services
With a commitment to sustainable business operations in all dimensions, BDMS has achieved the first rank as a global leader in sustainability in 2023 in the Healthcare Providers & Services group, both globally (DJSI World) for the first year and in the Emerging Markets group (DJSI Emerging Markets) for the third consecutive year, with the top social dimension score according to the evaluation by S&P Global
Dr. Poramaporn Prasarttong-Osoth, Chief Executive Officer of BDMS, revealed the strategies and goals for driving BDMS towards Medical Sustainability:
“Sustainable organizations need to look at 10 years ahead. The assessment criteria in Thailand and internationally are based on three similar principles: ESG. BDMS started with the criteria of THSI (Thailand Sustainability Investment) first. Once we passed the criteria of the stock exchange, we aimed for DJSI. The management and the team within the organization discussed whether we were ready to move forward, and the answer was “We must move forward; there’s no other option.” In Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region, there is no company yet that sets a model for sustainability in the Health Care business group, which posed the biggest challenge for BDMS. However, once we decided to proceed, we propelled the entire organization towards a shared goal through communication at all levels. Internal understanding within the organization is crucial. We are determined not to implement a top-down approach or command, but to proceed together in order to manage multiple dimensions, which we have implemented over the past three years by gathering internal data on all three issues: environment, society, and governance. We found that there are some aspects we are already implementing across over 50 hospitals nationwide.”
With a mission committed to delivering excellent services, BDMS drives innovation towards new value for society, creating equality and reducing disparities in accessing health services. It fosters environmental management towards a low-carbon society while committed to being a leader and model in providing health services for well-being on the path of sustainability that meets stakeholder expectations in all sectors, aiming to establish a network for sustainable medical business development throughout the supply chain by 2030.
For the operations in the years 2024 – 2026, BDMS is committed to business development towards sustainability across three dimensions: environment, aiming for Net Zero by 2050, promoting renewable energy utilization, focusing on circular economy development, and emphasizing waste management from hospitals through the upcycling of saline bags into PPE suits. Additionally, BDMS aims to develop its drug and saline factories within its business network, which are crucial components of healthcare service supply chains, into green industrial systems. In the economic sphere, BDMS seeks to stimulate innovation development, foster collaborative research with leading academic institutions to elevate service standards, as well as partner with suppliers for the development of a green supply chain. Furthermore, BDMS is developing work processes to reduce environmental impact while enhancing business efficiency and effectiveness.
In the social dimension, BDMS continues to prioritize comprehensive human rights care for internal personnel, business partners, and surrounding communities to ensure well-being with equitable access to medical services and healthcare through skill training projects in life-saving techniques and the use of Tele Mental Health for mental care, particularly focusing on educational institutions, which are centers for the younger generation – the future of the nation, and business partners, who are pivotal forces in the supply chain for medical business.
