Epilepsy, caused by abnormal brain waves, is a disease that exhibits various symptoms. Seizures are not necessarily the only indicators of epilepsy. When visiting the Epilepsy Center, patients will be diagnosed as follows.

  1. We will examine the brain visually in all dimensions to determine what part of the brain the epilepsy originates from.

  2. We will review the patient's history and perform electroencephalography along with other examination techniques to locate the physical position in the brain that causes seizures. The center focuses on diagnoses that suggest appropriate treatment options. Improper treatment can lead to worsening conditions.

  3. Some patients are absent-minded or suffer from temporary memory loss, which can be symptoms of epilepsy. Other symptoms include seizures and convulsions during which patients spontaneously lose control over their movements. Seizures can occur while one is asleep or awake.

  4. Diagnosis of some patients with syncope even without experience of convulsion or seizure. However, this can happen to patients with epilepsy. Frequent convulsions often result in decreased cognitive, intellectual, and mental performance. More dangerously, epilepsy is often confined to patients with diabetics, blood pressure and dementia.

  5. In diagnosing patients who suffer from seizures during sleep, electroencephalography might not find any causes of the condition because the brain waves associated with the symptom are only detectable during sleep. Patients need to be examined by an EMU (EEG monitoring unit). Patients must sleep at the Center to enable their brain waves to be recorded in a video. Technicians are on-site 24 hours a day.

  6. MRIs can be used to examine for epilepsy because of their ability to view very precise locations within the brain, finding brain lesions from childhood for instance. Because brain cells are fragile, lesions can occur from even a minor trauma, such as difficult labor and placenta complications during childbirth or lack of oxygen. Patients often become sick and develop a high fever during a long seizure. Seizures can damage brain cells, causing wounds and withering the cells. Even though new brain cells are generated, they aren't the same as the originals. We have often found that this is a cause of seizures.

  7. We provide diagnosis by a radioactive analysis called Ictal SPECT, which utilizes a type of scanner in combination with chemical injections at the time that a patient is experiencing a seizure. This kind of analysis locates the position of the seizure more clearly than other techniques, helping the doctor accurately plan surgery.

  8. Electroencephalography with an MRI scan, done by attaching a headbox, records brain function to clearly determine the position of a seizure.

  3. A PET Scan is a technology for detecting abnormal brain cells and pointing out the abnormal position precisely.

  4. An EMU (EEG monitoring unit) records the brain waves of patients while they are experiencing a seizure, producing a video. Patient information is displayed in the control room, where technicians are present 24 hours a day. The monitoring unit sends immediate signals when the patient experiences a seizure, and the doctor can log on even from his home computer to see the activity.
