Meningococcal meningitis is a serious bacterial infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It is considered a medical emergency that can become life-threatening. Despite the fact that it can affect anyone. Infants, children and teenagers are at highest risk of meningococcal meningitis. Serious complications often are brain damages, seizure, hearing loss, shock, tissue damage and amputation.
Warning signs in Children include:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache, stiff neck and muscle pain
- Skin rash
- Nausea and vomiting
- Signs in babies and infants are, e.g. high-pitched or moaning cry, irritability and agitation and refusing food/feeds
