Decades ago, if someone spoke about treating nearsightedness or farsightedness, we would think it impossible. However, current scientific advancements have made what was once deemed impossible quite easy, especially in treating nearsightedness and farsightedness with a method called “LASIK” (LASIK – Laser in situ keratomileusis).
“I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in eighth grade. Back then, I didn’t see it as a problem, except when playing sports, which was a bit of an inconvenience. Especially when swimming or scuba diving, my vision would be blurry,”
Dr. Pornthep Ma-manee, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and knee joints, recalled one day.
“I disliked wearing contact lenses because they were troublesome. Over a decade ago, when LASIK eye surgery began to emerge, I was interested and wanted to undergo the procedure. However, I saw many friends who had undergone the surgery experiencing significant side effects, such as seeing halos around lights or experiencing difficulties driving at night. Many complained about the unsatisfactory outcomes of the treatment contrary to their expectations. As a surgeon, vision is critically important to me, so I was afraid to proceed with the surgery.”
Years passed, and Dr. Pornthep began experiencing more issues with farsightedness, while nearsightedness continued to be a primary concern. Now, wearing glasses started to become more difficult as both nearsightedness and farsightedness became an issue.
“I began to reconsider LASIK once more. Just then, the LASIK center at Bangkok Hospital had a new tool called Femto LASIK. So, I talked to a friend who is an ophthalmologist working in America, who also treats patients with LASIK, and it’s quite popular there. After discussing with him, I found out that Bangkok Hospital used the same equipment as they do there. My friend suggested that if I decided to go through with LASIK, I should use this device because it’s the most modern LASIK equipment available at that time, with great results and minimal side effects. Eventually, I decided to go for it.”
Dr. Pornthep finally received treatment for his nearsightedness and farsightedness issues, and during the LASIK procedure, he mentioned,
“I didn’t even realize when the procedure was finished. It wasn’t painful; I didn’t feel anything. It was like just going for an eye exam. The doctor was talking to me throughout, and suddenly, he said it was done. The next day, I was able to return to work immediately. When I woke up in the morning, I could see clearly as if I was wearing glasses, even though I wasn’t. This has been the most worthwhile health expense of my life. Three months have passed since I had LASIK, and I am very happy.”
