Exercising or playing sports requires more movement and muscles strength than regular activities. Hence, they pose a greater risk of injuries. In order to protect yourself from such harm, you need to train your joints to move habitually.  The most important thing is to strengthen your muscles and keep them flexible to avoid torn or inflamed ligaments.

Joints and muscles flexibility training involves stretching the muscles incessantly, especially before playing sports; while muscles strength training is to enhance muscles endurance through weight training to prepare different muscles for prolonged exertion.

In addition, external factors – such as stadiums, equipment, and various protective gear for each type of sports – are also important.  Bangkok Academy of Sports and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) can provide consultation pertaining to the prevention of such injuries.

    Shoulder Pain and Frozen Shoulder

Shoulder joints are the parts that have the most movements in the body.  So, any problem with a shoulder usually leads to a frozen shoulder or inability to move it completely, especially when you try to hold your hands behind you or to scratch your back, etc.

Generally, frozen shoulder is a consequence of an issue within the shoulder – for example, shoulder pain, sleeping on the side and experiencing pain at night – that causes stiffness in the shoulder.  So, if you experience this symptom, your doctor will need to determine its root cause so that a treatment can be prescribed accordingly.  This will help alleviate the pain and stiffness in the shoulder, yielding a permanent solution as quickly as possible.

Chronic Shoulder Dislocation After an Accident

The first time you suffer a dislocated shoulder from an accident, it usually is extremely painful and you probably have to see a doctor to have the shoulder realigned.   Later, a common persistent problem you will face is a loose shoulder and repeated dislocation, though the pain will become less with each recurrence.

Nevertheless, this can interfere with your daily routine – for example, shoulder dislocation during sleep at night or while working or exercising.  So, before it disrupts your daily life ceaselessly, you need to have the condition permanently treated; so that you can regain the full use of your shoulders once more – particularly to play sports.

The treatment in this case is the arthroscopy to repair torn ligament in the shoulder.  This is a minimally invasive surgery that causes less pain.  You only need to stay one night at the hospital, and can resume your daily routine faster.  The result of this type of surgery is more satisfactory than the old method, especially for athletes whose reduced recovery period is essential as they need to get back to work as soon as possible.

How to Repair Torn Knee Ligament or Meniscus?

If you accidentally twist a knee, you may have torn a knee ligament or a meniscus – especially when you feel pain and hear a popping sound at the same time, or experience the pain and swelling around the knee.  In order to prescribe the right treatment, your doctor will need to examine and evaluate your condition using specific equipment such as X-ray, MRI, etc.

After the accident, you will have aches and pain in the affected knee, along with a particularly swollen knee joint.  However, with some rest and analgesic medicine as well as periodic cold presses, your condition will begin to improve so much that you will be able to walk again.  However, some discomfort may still linger – such as sharp pain in the knee joint, swollen knee after standing or walking for a long period of time.  You may also experience loose knee while walking and turning sharply, or while climbing up or down stairs.  These symptoms will remain until the torn ligaments are repaired properly.
