Bangkok Hospital Headquarters is advancing toward becoming an Asia-Pacific Medical Robot Hub, a regional center for medical robotics innovation, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Device Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The collaboration aims to strengthen existing expertise and further enhance standards of care through robot- assisted surgery. With experience in more than 1,000 cases performed using the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery system, Bangkok Hospital Headquarters seeks to promote the capabilities of Thai surgeons through education, training, and knowledge exchange, supporting the advancement of Thailand’s surgical standards to an international level while delivering improved outcomes for patients.
Dr. Ekkit Surakarn, Deputy Director of Bangkok Hospital, said that the hospital places strong emphasis on medical technology alongside the development of healthcare professionals. Experience gained from more than 1,000 robot-assisted surgical cases has generated valuable expertise and strengthened the specialized skills of the surgical team, contributing to higher standards of care for various surgical conditions. This collaboration represents an important step in establishing a structured learning ecosystem for robotic surgery, enabling patients to receive treatment that is more effective and safer.
Under the one-year MOU, both parties will collaborate on several key initiatives to advance robotic surgery, including the establishment of an In-house Robotic Training Center within the hospital; the skill development of surgeons and specialists through training programs and both international and in-house proctorship programs; the development of patient care standards; the enhancement of infrastructure and surgical simulation systems; and the organization of the BDMS Robotic Surgery Annual Meeting 2026 under the theme “1,000 Cases Celebration & Scientific Session,” to be held on 10 August 2026. The event will provide a platform for experts from Thailand and abroad to exchange knowledge and jointly advance standards of care through robotic surgery.
Dr. Chanin Pundee, Director of the Surgery Center at Bangkok Hospital and a surgeon specialist in minimally invasive and robotic abdominal surgery, revealed that Bangkok Hospital currently uses the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery system to treat more than 1,000 patients with complex conditions across abdominal, thoracic, pulmonary, gynecological, and urological surgeries. Over the past three years, Bangkok Hospital Headquarters has performed 547 abdominal surgeries, 237 lung surgeries, 131 gynecological surgeries, and 92 urological surgeries involving the kidneys and prostate (data as of June 2026). This technology enables highly precise procedures, reduces blood loss and tissue trauma, lowers the risk of complication and infection, resulting in faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker return to daily life.
