What Is Heart Radiofrequency Ablation?
Heart radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that treats irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). A doctor threads thin tubes (catheters) through your blood vessels to the heart, using specified energy (thermal or non-thermal) to destroy the tiny areas of tissue causing the faulty electrical signals.
Patient Guides: Before, During, and After the Procedure
- Before: You will undergo medical tests, adjust your current medications as directed by your doctor, and fast the night before the procedure.
- During: Under sedation or anesthesia, catheters are inserted through the groin to the heart to find and destroy the abnormal tissue. This usually takes 2 to 4 hours.
- After: You must lie flat for a few hours to prevent bleeding at the groin site. Expect same-day or next-day discharge, and avoid heavy lifting for about a week.
