The course has been conducted since 2016 by the faculty of the ECMO Center at Bangkok Heart Hospital. This instructive 3-day ELSO Endorsed course is designed for physicians (intensivists, surgeons etc.), nurses, perfusionists and other health care professionals caring for patients who receive Extracorporeal Life Support. It is a 3-day course that covers most aspects of ECMO management comprehensively with simulation and lecture components attached to it. The program covers lectures and small group teaching based on water drills and simulation. The lectures include components of the ECMO circuit, indications for ECMO, contraindications, managing the patient on ECMO, cannulation strategy, physiology, anticoagulation, and troubleshooting, etc.
What it is:
- A certification for adult ECMO practitioners (nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians, perfusionists) to ensure standardized competency.
- Establishes a globally recognized benchmark for ECMO skills and knowledge.
Key Components:
- Didactic Education: Completion of ELSO-endorsed or official ELSO courses covering adult ECMO principles.
- Simulation: Documented participation in simulation labs.
- Clinical Experience: Meeting specific clinical hours and experience requirements.
- Examination: Passing a proctored, online exam with NBME-style questions.

- To standardize ECMO practice across different sites and disciplines.
- To improve patient care and safety by ensuring practitioners meet high standards.
- To recognize the unique skills needed for competent ECMO management.
