LOVE your heart: “Love your heart...get informed for prevention and treatment” (Aneurysm)

    Updated on: 11 Dec 2025

    Aneurysm

An aneurysm is a localized, blood-filled balloon-like bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. In cases of aortic aneurysms the patient will often not display any symptoms unless the bulge becomes clearly visible. Some symptoms may include stomach pain, back pain, and acute chest pain often accompanied by shock due to the sudden loss of blood from rupture of the aneurysm. Aneurysms can generally be diagnosed with an ultrasound or X-ray.

    Major Causes

Smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, being overweight, and genetics can all contribute to a potential aneurysm.

    Two Methods of Treatment

    1. Aortic Aneurysm Surgery
This involves the removal of the enlarged portion of the blood vessel and replacing it with a Woven Graft to restore blood flow. The incision size for the surgery may be quite substantial, and patients will be required to recover at the hospital for 7-10 days.
    2. Endovascular Repair
In this method a synthetic stent is inserted via a small incision in the groin. The stent will then be positioned at the enlarged portion of the blood vessel to prevent blood from reaching the aneurysm which will then gradually shrink. Patients can expect a small incision wound, a short stay at the hospital, and a swift return to daily activities.

At the Bangkok Heart Hospital, we are equipped to offer both types of procedures in emergency situations, Bangkok Heart Hospital can perform the emergency within 1-2 hours
