BDMS Wellness Clinic and Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital join forces as advocates to raise awareness among all women about breast cancer to help reduce the loss rate of women worldwide. They are ready to care for breast cancer patients in all dimensions, from prevention, diagnosis, treatment, to post-remission care, so that all women can go through the challenging times of facing this disease with strength and return to a good quality of life again.

    Prevention (Prevention)

Breast cancer prevention can be achieved through various methods, which can be divided into lifestyle changes, regular health screenings, and preventive medication for high-risk groups as follows:

    Lifestyle Changes:

    • Weight Control: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer, especially after menopause, as fat tissue cells can produce estrogen hormones, which may increase the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers like breast cancer. Therefore, it is important to maintain a stable weight.
    • Regular Exercise: Exercise helps reduce the risk of breast cancer. It is recommended to exercise at least 150 minutes per week.
    • Avoid Alcohol: Consuming alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. Reducing or avoiding alcohol can help reduce the risk.
    • Healthy Diet: Consume a diet high in fiber and rich in antioxidants, such as low-sugar fruits and vegetables. Choose calcium-rich foods such as leafy greens, tofu, and small fish, and reduce the consumption of animal fat, red meat, and processed meats.

    Breast Cancer Detection (Detection)

    • Self-examination for breast cancer helps women detect abnormalities such as lumps or changes in the breast by doing self-exams regularly every month.
    • Breast examination by a doctor. The doctor will conduct a thorough breast examination to detect any lumps or other abnormalities.
    • 3D digital mammograms and ultrasounds use X-rays and sound waves to examine breast tissue. This method is considered the most effective screening for early-stage breast cancer.
    • Genetic testing. In cases with a family history of breast cancer, genetic testing may be conducted to determine the potential risk from abnormal genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2.

    Breast Cancer Diagnosis (Diagnosis)

Breast cancer diagnosis involves a process to confirm whether the abnormalities found in initial screening are cancerous. If cancerous, it is necessary to determine the type and stage of cancer through further detailed tests such as biopsy (Biopsy), MRI, cytology examination (Cytology), hormone level testing, and genetic testing.

Diagnosis results will specify with certainty whether the lump or abnormality detected is cancerous, indicate the type of cancer, and provide essential information for the treatment planning.

    Breast Cancer Treatment (Treatment)

For women with stage 0 breast cancer, surgical treatment offers a nearly 100% chance of recovery. In women with stage 1 breast cancer and tumors smaller than 1 centimeter, surgery alone can lead to recovery in approximately 90% . If breast cancer is detected at an early stage, patients can choose between spot surgery (breast-conserving surgery or partial surgery) or full breast removal. For breast-conserving surgery, radiation therapy must follow, whereas full breast removal does not require radiation post-surgery. Both methods result in the same outcome: a nearly 100% chance of recovery without chemotherapy. However, if breast cancer is detected at a larger stage, starting from stage 1 end, full breast removal is necessary, along with supplementary chemotherapy and hormone therapy to reduce recurrence risk. We can reconstruct the breast to its original shape or closer by using silicone implants or muscle from other parts to build a new breast, enabling patients to live confidently with good quality of life, free from embarrassment regarding their chest.
