Question:Does leukemia only affect white blood cells?
Answer: Leukemia is a blood cancer which starts in blood-forming tissue, usually the bone marrow. Leukemia leads to uncontrolled production of abnormal white blood cells, the essential part of the immune system to rapidly grow and divide. These white blood cells are not fully developed and are called blasts or leukemia cells. They largely interfere the production of red blood cells and platelets. Leukemia results in impaired quantity and function of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Related signs and symptoms include poor immune system leading to frequent infections, fever, weakness and fatigue as well as anemia or pale caused by lowered red blood cells and bruise or excessive bleeding due to decreased platelet counts. Leukemia is one of the most dangerous blood cancers since it can progress quickly and if left untreated, it usually leads to fatal condition.
