- Intracavitary Therapy refers to the insertion of iridium 192 into special equipemtn to be inserted into various cavities of the body such as anus or cervix
- Intraluminal Therapy refers to insertion of iridium 192 into specialized objects that may be inserted into are such as lungs or esophogaus.
- Intersitial implant refers to insertion of iridium 192 into the tumor or tissues between the tumor.

Benefits
- This treatment involves placing radioactive material near or at the point that needs treatment. This can help to limit radiation exposure to surrounding areas.

Preparation (During)
- Insertion of Iridium 192 is part of the treatment proccess. Your doctor will insert the medical device into the cavity once x-ray confirms positioning.
- The patient will be awake during the procedure, it is recommended to try to be in a calm state-of-mind to ensure everything goes smoothly.
- After the device has been inserted the computer will run a test to determine accurately quantity of radiation. The entire proccess should take approximately 15-30 minutes
- Once treatment is compltete the computer will automatically remove the radioactive element from the patient’s body while the doctor removes the medical device.
- Each patient will require approximately 2-5 sessions for 1-2 times a week. This will depend on each case i.e. stage of cancer and your doctor’s diagnosis. During this time it is important to pay attention to any instructions and recommendations provided by your doctor.
Recommendations after Procedure
Patients with Cervical Cancer
- The day after do not perform a vaginal douching
- Do not engage in sexual relations
- Try not to lift things that are heavier than 2-3 kg.
- Notice if there is bleeding on your garments
- Eat as regular
- There may be some abdominal pain, this can be remedied by a dosage of paracetemol
- If there is irritation during urination that does not subside after water consumption it is recommended to contact a healthcare professional
Patients with Nasopharyngeal Cancer
- Notice bleeding
- After procedure you may experience runny nose
- Try to not pick your nose as it may cause bleeding
- If there is bleeding visit your doctor immediately
