Multiple sclerosis or MS is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system, affecting the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, causing communication problems and permanent damages or deterioration of the nerves. Women are two times as likely as men are to have MS. Common signs and symptoms are:
- Blurry vision often with eye pain during eye movement
- Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
- Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain neck movements, especially bending the neck forward
Diagnosis of MS
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain and spinal cord
- Blood test and spinal tap (lumbar puncture)
