Prisana Poonarin: Underwent bilateral muscle-preserving hip replacement surgery simultaneously
“Three years ago, I had severe pain radiating down my right leg. I had to stop and rest frequently while walking or doing activities because of a sharp pain in my buttocks. It felt like my leg was very heavy and difficult to lift. Living through that period was challenging; I had to use both a cane and a wheelchair, especially when going out, which was a significant obstacle.”
What happened to Prisana is one of the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the hip, a condition that is increasingly causing suffering for many patients. However, thanks to advances in medical technology and a better understanding of the disease by medical teams, the diagnosis and treatment of hip osteoarthritis are now more accurate and of higher quality, allowing patients to return to normal life in a relatively short period.
“I had a problem with a nerve compressed by bone 10 years ago, so I thought the symptoms might be due to that. Initially, I treated it with modern medicine, but it still hurt, so I tried acupuncture and stretching massages as well, but to no avail. Then, after thoroughly researching and deciding to seek treatment, an X-ray by the doctor found that my right hip joint had dislocated from its socket, while the left hip was close to the socket because it had to bear the weight of the right leg, and the hip socket had also shallowed.”
Although I had experienced pain from bone surgery before, I was confident in the medical team’s treatment and knew the benefits of the new hip replacement surgery technique without cutting the muscle (Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement). This would cause less pain, quicker recovery, and allow for more convenient and rapid movement after surgery, leading me to decisively undergo surgery on both hips simultaneously without hesitation.
“As a former nurse, I understood the new surgical procedure that would cause less pain and allow for faster recovery. The total time from surgery to recovery was just 5 days, during which I could start walking and use the bathroom by myself from the second day after the operation. Now, more than 3 months have passed, and I no longer have any pain when walking, driving, climbing stairs, or sleeping. I think I made the right decision to undergo that surgery.”
From the day she came to see the doctor with advanced-stage hip osteoarthritis symptoms to today, Prisana tells us with bright and happy eyes,
“I would like to thank you for the helpful advice, the confidence, and the moral support throughout the treatment. Now, I have fully recovered and can return to my normal life.”
