    Health benefits of vitamin D

    Vitamin D is an important micronutrient for building and maintaining your healthy bones. It also regulates many other cellular functions in your body. Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties support immune health, muscle function and brain cell activity.

    Sources of vitamin D

    Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced in your body when UV radiation from sunlight strikes the skin and trigger vitamin D3 synthesis. In foods and dietary supplements, vitamin D has two main forms, including vitamin D2 and D3.

    Factors influencing vitamin D level

    The amount of vitamin D produced from your skin depends on many factors, including the time of day, season, latitude and your skin pigmentation. Depending on where you live and your lifestyle, vitamin D production might decrease or be completely absent during the winter months. Sunscreen, while important to prevent skin cancer, also can decrease vitamin D production.

    Precautions about vitamin D

    Vitamin D is generally considered safe if taken in appropriate doses. However, taking too much vitamin D in the form of supplements can be harmful. Therefore, vitamin D levels in your blood should be monitored and controlled for better treatment outcome and patient safety.
